Occupation of NYU to #AbolishTheBox on College Applications

Media Advisory

Students and Advocates Demand NYU Abolish Box- Admin Threatening to Take Disciplinary Action and Criminal Action Against Non-Students

WHAT: Incarceration to Education Coalition is occupying Kimmel at NYU until administration agrees to Abolish the Box on the college application. We have been campaigning for this for three years on the principle that Higher Education should be accessible to everyone, particularly for those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised. NYU admin is refusing our demands and MAY take disciplinary action against students that remain in the building at midnight, and MAY take criminal action against non-students. Students plan on occupying Kimmel until their demands are met. We demand NYU not take any disciplinary action and instead support the students rather than punish them for their efforts towards safer re-entry and ending mass incarceration. We are calling for media coverage to document the punitive way the administration is responding to student advocacy.

MEDIA ADVISORY: For March 25, 2016 @ 11:45PM - March 26,12AM

ABOUT THE INCARCERATION TO EDUCATION COALITION:

IEC is a group of New York University community members (students with and without criminal records, faculty, alumni, and public supporters) working to end discrimination against formerly incarcerated NYU applicants and applicants with criminal records. We are founded on the principles that education is a human right, and that we as members of the NYU community have an active obligation to expand that right while working for racial and economic justice.  Our vision and efforts are centered around the voices and experiences of directly impacted people, families and communities.
